While he had established a body of work that was consistant in style involving expressionist landscape, his work was largely undiscovered. Later, while pursueing mixed media sculpture he continued to experiment with painting, however they were rarely exhibited or sold. Finally in 1997 he began to make public various themes of paintings, they have since evolved into what will become a substantial bodyof unique Western Canadian art.
Don Elzer began his art career as a self-taught landscape painter in 1980, painting landscapes in the Western Canadian park system.
Today, the subject matter of Elzer’s paintings varies depending on the theme. His style is diverse as he seeks to walk between contemporary and traditional vantage points.
“I find a need to express my observations of the world in a political and cultural context, but in doing so I must ground myself regularly in the natural world by studying the landscape. Upon reflection I will never escape these two extremes which I believe to be at the root of my life’s work”.
